THE CURATION

Everything we have written.

One piece so far. It goes up when there is something worth saying, not on a schedule.

Thirteen more, no announcement.

Fifty five days after xperiment, Ken Carson did not announce anything. He extended it.

xperiment, cartunez arrived at midnight on 27 August. Thirty five songs across two discs, an hour and thirty two minutes, on Opium and Interscope. Disc one is the twenty two that came out on 3 July. Disc two is thirteen that were not there before. The same record, with more of it.

The rollout ran on USB drives. Not a press cycle, not a countdown. Physical drives hidden in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, and the tracklist surfaced because people went and found them. The artists on the record posted photographs of a piece of hardware. Everything official arrived afterwards, confirming what the audience already had.

That is the part worth sitting with. Most artists at this altitude treat a record as a launch, something you defend for a year while the machinery catches up behind you. Carson treats it as an open file. Thirteen songs go on because they were finished, not because a quarter needed filling.

What it costs him is the moment. There is no event here, no rollout anybody will remember, no single night the culture agreed to look in the same direction at once. What it buys him is a room that never has to be rebuilt, because it was never let go of.

He is at Moody Center in Austin on 15 September. His date, not ours. We will be on the floor for it with a phone, which is the only angle that shows what any of this actually does to a room.
